From Accounting Firm to Technology Pioneer
Donald Rome founded D. W. Rome, Incorporated in 1985 in Chicago, Illinois as a CPA firm specializing in associations. The firm prepared tax returns, advised on UBIT compliance, and helped organizations incorporate. Donald even managed associations directly, handling everything from membership dues to strategic planning. The company later relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida.
That hands-on experience taught Donald something critical: associations needed technology built specifically for how they work. Not generic CRMs. Not enterprise software adapted from corporate settings. Purpose-built tools for membership management.
In 1996, when the internet was still dominated by dial-up modems and creating a simple website cost tens of thousands of dollars, Donald launched i4a (Internet4Associations). i4a became one of the first companies to offer cloud-based, Software-as-a-Service membership management.

Donald Rome founded i4a (Internet4Associations) in 1996 after a decade of serving associations as a CPA and management consultant.
His journey began in 1985 when he established D. W. Rome, Incorporated, a CPA firm specializing in association accounting, tax advisory, and management. That hands-on experience with associations, including serving as manager for professional societies and trade groups, revealed a critical gap: associations needed technology built specifically for how they work.
When Donald launched i4a, the internet was still dominated by dial-up modems. He saw that associations needed affordable, purpose-built tools, not expensive custom solutions designed for large corporations.
